General Notes: Research Notes: When I was interviewing my cousin, Mack Daugherty, he informed me
that Sam and Mary Simpson Williams were buried at Valley Spring Cemetery, although
there is no tombstone to mark their grave. He knew this because as a boy he
remembered attending their funerals there. He also said his mother told him that they
were buried there.
On the 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Llano, Llano Co., Texas Sam and Mary Williams are living with his son John and his wife Marilda and their children.
I found Sam and Mary Simpson living in Lohn, McCullough Co., Texas Census for 1910, with their daughter Maud Harmon, her husband and children.
On the 1920 U.S. Federal Census for Lohn, McCullough Co., Texas,, Sam and Mary are living with Elizabeth Williams Webb and her husband David, and their children. Also living with David and Betty Webb is Winnie Jolly, the daughter of Sam and Mary's daughter Cora Williams Jolly, who died in childbirth.
Apparently from these censuses, Sam and Mary moved around between their children in their later years. Apparently they were both living with Elizabeth Webb when they died. I have not been able to obtain a death certificate for Sam, but have located Mary Williams', and it states she died in McCulloch Co., and was buried in Valley Spring.Cemetery, Valley Spring, Llano Co., Texas3
Sam served for the State of Arkansas in the Civil War.

Samuel married Mary Eliza Simpson on 6 Jun 1856 in Ouachita County, Arkansas. Mary was born on 1 Jun 1840 in Ouachita County, Arkansas, died on 11 Sep 1927 in Brady, McCulllouch County, Texas at age 87, and was buried in Valley Spring Cemetery, Llano County, Texas, USA.
General Notes: Obituary - GRANDMA WILLIAMS - Mary E. Williams was born June 1,
1840, in the state of Arkansas. In 1856 she was married to S.E. Williams, moving to
Texas in 1883, and living her until her death, which came September 11, 1927, at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. D.A. Webb, near Lohn, McCulloch county. The remains were carried to Valley Springs for interment. Rev. J.J. Mason, spoke words of comfort to the bereaved ones.
To this union twelve children were born, five of whom preceded her in death. Seven are left to mourn for her, all being present at the time of death except one, Mrs. W.J. Kuykendall of Abbott, New Mexico. The ones present were J.W. Williams, Llano; Mrs. D.A. Webb, Lohn, Mrs. W.E. Nance, Menard, Mrs. J.E. Harmon, Abilene, Mrs. Lon Talley, Valley Spring, and C.L. Williams, Chillicothe, Texas.
Grandma joined the Methodist church at an early age and lived a devout christian until death. Grandmother was loved by all who knew her. She was so kind and loving to all especially her children, never failing to administer to them as long as she was able.
She was good and kind to her neighbors when able, always ready to wait on the sick. But the Death Angel has called her up yonder, where sickness, death or pain can be had no more.
Children let me say to you to not grieve for her, for she is far better off than any of us that's left here in this world of trouble. She has gone to join Grandpa in heaven, there to await and welcome each of us when we have lived in a way that we can say, like she did, "Let me go; I am ready and willing and want to go." Then we can meet her around the great white throne to part no more. Grandma leaves seven children and quite a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary Simpson Williams' death certificate states that she was buried in Valley Spring,
Texas. Her daughter-in-law Alice Marilda Bardin Williams wrote her obituary.
In a letter written by a cousin of Mary Simpson Williams, it is stated that Sam Williams sold his farm in Ouachita Co., Arkansas for $350.00 and moved to Texas to his father's home. It states their daughter lizabeth "Bettie" Williams went ahead of the rest of the family. It said she ran away with "one man ebb", and married at Cabe Bolles, and moved to Texas. Then she sais "I know it has been a sad time indeed with Mary parted with her mother forever, lost her son William and daughter ran away.4

He passed away November 4, 1913 at the age of 74 years. His family lived in the large log home of his father O.C.J. Phillips.
Courtesy of Tom Lanier - A picture of the son of William O. Phillips, born March 1, 1940. He was married to Mary E. Williams, October 11, 1860 and the following children were born to them, viz. T. Ollie, Samuel W., W.O., Jr., Rufus E., Charles, Lou Ellen, Sallie J., Dollie A., George W., Jim and John (Twins). Only three of them survive, Lou
Ellen, Jim and John.
After his marriage, he lived at the "Phillips Ranch", but moved down to Llano town and engaged in the mercantile and cattle business, during some of which time he was a blacksmith. His father having died, he and the widowed mother exchanged property, whereby she moved down to Llano and took over the Phillips property therein, and William took over the "Phillips Ranch" property near the Valley Spring village where he resided until his death, November 13, 1913. "Uncle Billie", as he later generally came to be called, has a story of himself worth noting - considering his varied activities in his long life course. He bought cattle for other persons. Here follows a copy of a power of attorney to him given by the late Charles T. Moss concerning beef cattle of the latter.viz.

General Notes: Williams Family History: Darlene Williams McMurry
My Williams grandparents are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Texas. In 1992, when Glenn and I were on one of our motor home trips, we stopped in Austin and found the cemetery. We were lucky that a caretaker was there and looked through his records to find the location of their graves. It is a huge place and we could have spent all day hunting for a Williams marker. It happened to be listed under Rogers, as my Aunt Minnie and her husband are buried in the same plot. For years a large picture of my grandmother's flower-covered grave has been in our family. Only because the cemetery's name is on that picture did I know where my grandparents were buried. I was too small to remember much about my grandmother's burial. From the obituary clippings I do know that the funeral was at the Ward Memorial Church. She was a member of Mary Rebekah Lodge, #117, in Austin, TX, having joined July 23, 1921. When she and my grandfather lived in Llano, TX, they had belonged to Lodge #162 for 30 years.
James married Susan Woodruff Colter, daughter of Sampson H Colter and Adaline E Owen, in 1871 in Texas, USA. Susan was born on 12 Dec 1859 in Texas, USA and died on 19 Sep 1925 at age 65.

Newspaper Article - CELEBRATES GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Williams of Brownwood celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the home of their son, J.F. Williams, in this city last Sunday. They were married in Llano County on November 25, 1885, at Valley Spring and have lived in Llano and San Saba Counties for the entire time, until seven years ago when they moved to Brownwood to make their home. Mrs. Williams was Miss Marilda Burleson before
she was married. There are ten living children, 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. At the celebration Sunday there were the following children and grandchildren: Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Williams of San Saba, Mrs. C.W. Walker and children, Cecil, Alice May, and Sonny Boy, of Llanop Mrs. Terrell Garrett and son, and Mrs. W.F. Keng and son, Billy of Valley Spring, Mr. and Mrs A.F. Griffin and son, Floyd Fennell of Brownwood. Other present for the happy occasion were: Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Fleming and children, Maxine and Billie Jean, and Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Stewart Jr., and Linden Fleming of Llano, and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Browning and Mrs. Bettie Webb of Lohn.
When I was about 4 years old, my grandfather Williams was gravely ill. Right before Christmas in 1951, my mother was summoned to come to Llano, because it didn't seem that he would live too much longer. I have memories of that experience, and for a long time I didn't know if they were my memories, or if someone had told me about it and I just assumed I remembered it. But in later life, I realized no one has ever talked to me about these events, so they must be my memories.
I am assuming we drove to Llano. I don't remember how we got there, because we went to Llano quite a bit, and one trip was just like all the others. This was before the age of freeways, so my Dad always drove to San Antonio, then he would take streets around San Antonio and go on to Llano that way, rather than drive through San Antonio. My Dad HATED big cities. I remember we always took a road that went by the South Texas Insane Asylum. We would drive by this facility that had a tall fence around it, and
people were walking on the grounds and peering out of the fence, as we drove by. I was always afraid they would get out and get me. My Dad was responsible for that because everytime we drove by, he would say, "well there's the funny farm, that's where they lock up all the crazy people." That's all he had to say to me to scare me to death.
The next thing I remember was standing in the living room of my Aunt Mary's house, and all the adults were standing around talking quietly. One by one they would go into the bedroom in the back and talk briefly with my grandfather, who was sitting up in the bed. All I could see was a small man with a white beard and mustache. I remember my mother crying, and then someone saying he had died. I remembered looking at him, and at my age was trying to figure out who he was.
Now that I'm older, and have lost both my parents, I now understand why my Mom was crying. Her Dad had died. I don't remember ever talking to him at all. I am in a picture of the family, and he sitting in the middle of all of us, taken at the last family reunion in the summer of 1951, right before he died. I was his next to the youngest grandchild, so I feel it is doubtful, we ever said a word to each other.
John's wife, Marilda, died in 1938 while they were all living in Brownwood, Texas. After her death, John moved back to Llano, to live with his daughter Mary. He was a deacon in the Valley Spring Baptist Church in Valley Spring, Texas. That church was established by his wife's mother, Abigail Smith Bardin Burleson, and her second husband Cummings Burleson. John's two daughters, Katie, and Ernestine, were members there also until their deaths.
John and Marilda Williams, and family were found on the 1920 U.S. Federal Census in San Saba Co., Texas. Sam and Mary Williams, John's parents were living with them.
John was buried in Kuykendall Cemetery, in Cherokee, San Saba Co., Texas.

General Notes: General Notes: David Andrew Webb was already living in Freestone Co., Texas when he got married so he took his brother, Madison, with him when he went to Arkansas to mary Betty.
After the wedding they moved back to Freestone Co. where a son, Robert Lee and a
daughter, Ethel were born.
For some reason, they moved back to Arkansas where a daughter, Myrtle Bessie, was
born in 1894. They lived there until 1895 when David and his family moved back to Texas by way of the Oklahoma Territory, travelling in a group with a wagon train. One night they were camped and had pulled all of the wagons into a circle when a bunch of Indians came up and ganged around the wagons and almost scared them to death. The Indians did them no harm and finally rode off. The Webbs eventually left the wagon train to head for Llano Co., Texas, settling at Valley Springs, Texas. There two more children-Lola and Monroe were born.
In 1899 the family moved again to one mile east of Lohn, in McCulloch Co., Texas on what was known as the "Drinkard Place", but owned by a Will Issacs. In 1904 or 1905 David bought a 160 acre farm about five miles east of Lohn from a Mr. Weldon. He owned it for several years and eventually sold it to a Dr. W. M. Land whose family still owned the property in the late 1960's. For a number of years prior to 1967, it was
leased and farmed by W. Wayne Bray, son of Loila Webb Bray.
The Webb family moved from the "Drinkard Place" to another farm owned by the Winstead family where they lived for about a year, moving again to another farm on Cow Creek, also owned by Will Issacs. They spent seven years there. In 1907 they moved to the Roberts farm just to the west of the town of Lohn, where they spent another seven years. Then in 1914 they moved to the A.J. Smith farm two miles west of
Lohn where they were residing at the time of the death of David Andrew Webb, who died April 2, 1921. Just a few months later the house where they lived burned to the ground - the fire caused by an explosion of a kerosene cook-stove. The home was rebuilt and the property rented to A.J. Browning, a nephew by marriage. Betty moved in and lived with A.J. "Allie" and Winnie Dee for a year or so and then moved in with her son, Lee, who owned a farm and ranch a few miles south of Lohn. Betty was living with her son at the time of her death in 1940.
Besides their own family, David and Betty helped to rear their nephew and niece, A.J. and Winnie Dee Jolly. Betty's sister, Cora Jolly died soon after her second child, Winnie Dee, was born so the two children moved into their home. A.J. lived with his aunt and uncle for about two years, but Winnie Dee made her home with the Webbs until she got married.
The Webbs were well-known citizens of the community of Lohn, taking an active interest in church, schools and politics. David Andrew Webb, according to election results, was elected Constable of Precinct #4
(Lohn) in November 11, 1912.

General Notes: Williams Family History: Darlene Williams McMurry
Uncle Ed's wife was Leona and they had at least two sons. About the only memory I have of them is my Uncle's funeral in Eastland, Texas, during World War II, which I attended with my Father.
James married Tessie T McGuire Blalock, daughter of Unknown and Martha Evoline McGuire, on 15 Dec 1897. Tessie was born in Jun 1878 in Burnet, Burnet County, Texas, USA.
General Notes: Tessie was raised by her aunt Salome and her husband John J. Blalock as one of their own.
She is first listed in the 1880 census as being the 1-year-old granddaughter of R. B. McGuire, but is not listed under Minerva as Minerva's two girls are. This was our first clue that she belonged to one of the other sisters.
After she is taken in by John and Salome, she is raised in Burnet Co. TX
On December 15, 1897 she married James Edward "Edd" Williams who is a brother to one of Laura Barker's sonsin-law. The couple were married in Llano, TX where Laura's family lived at the time.
Tessie is found in the 1900 Llano census with her husband, James E. Williams. Listed with them is Johnnie Josephine Blalock who is noted as Tessie's sister. Johnnie is 1 1/2-years-old at the time. Salome died in 1898, a year after Johnnie's birth.
In 1905 Tessie gives birth to a boy, Carl.
In the 1910 San Saba Co. TX census she is listed with James E. Williams and their son, Carl. Baby Johnnie is back with her father in Burnet in 1910.
In the Bexar Co. TX 1920 census she and James are listed with their two sons, Carl and E. W. and Johnnie Blalock, once again, living on S. Alamo Street. James is a carpenter. Johnnie is also counted with her father in Feb. She may have been visiting when counted in the Williams household in Jan.
Dovie, one of Salome's daughters is also living in Bexar Co. in San Antonio, TX in 1920. Sometime between 1920 and 1930, Tessie and Edd are divorced and Tessie is remarried to a Charlie Owen.
1930 San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX 135 Linares Ave.
Charlie Owen - head - 42 house painter
Tessie - wife 50 still claiming her father's birth as AL (John Blalock's birth place)
If Tessie was still there in 1938, she would have, more than likely been helping Dovie care for John Blalock. We do not have record of Tessie's death nor do we know where she is buried.
Children from this marriage were:

General Notes: Williams Family History: Darlene Williams McMurry
My Uncle Ollie's wife was named Frank. That always seemed strange to me as Ollie could be a girl's name and Frank a boy's name. Later in life I learned that Aunt Frank's real maiden name was Mary Frances Tow. However, I never heard anyone call her anything except Frank. They moved from Texas to Ponca City, Oklahoma, where my uncle worked for many years at the Continental Oil Company refinery there. I knew most of their five children, as we would go to visit them once or twice a year. Today I still hear from Esther at Christmas. She and the youngest, Betty Lee, are the only children still alive. My knowledge of my cousins' families is very sparse.

Aunt Minnie married Joe Rogers. They had two daughters, Pauline and Lucille. The Rogers family ran a restaurant in Austin, Texas. I still have a couple little dishes from their restaurant. My most vivid memory of the family was when we went to Pauline's home to see my grandmother on her deathbed. She had been injured in an automobile accident. Since I was only 4 ½ years old, I don't remember much, but do have a picture in my mind of their new phonograph. It was the type with a big horn. Somehow it seems that they had a big ceramic dog sitting by it. That may be a false memory, but the listening dog was a trademark of Edison's phonograph with the big horn and I've seen pictures of that through the years.

Uncle Calvin married Ima Barker. I knew their family best because we lived in Christine together until I moved to Kansas when I was eight. I have always felt close to the family. Through the years we visited in Texas a number of times. They had five children. Unfortunately, only two are still living. Ila Mae and Thelma live in Edna, Texas, and Ila Mae has always been the cousin to keep me informed about the family. I have fond memories of my Aunt Ima.
