General Notes:Tax lists of Henry County, Virginia by Lela C. Adams page 9
1778 - Barker, John - Double tax
A double tax in Henry County at that time indicates the John Barker Sr refused an oath of loyalty to the state of Virginia. He apparently was still loyal to England even though his son, Thomas O Barker was probably a Revolutionary war soldier at this time and his other sons where not doubled taxed, they apparently had already taken the oath. Regardless, John Barker Sr seems to have taken the oath before tax season the next year.

The National Park Service Kings Mountain National Military Park web site: http://www.nps.gov/kimo/ Kings Mountain National Military Park commemorates a pivotal and significant victory by American Patriots over American Loyalists during the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War. The battle fought on October 7, 1780 destroyed the left wing of Cornwallis' army and effectively ended Loyalist ascendance in the Carolinas. The victory halted the British advance into North Carolina, forced Lord Cornwallis to retreat from Charlotte into South Carolina, and gave General Nathanael Greene the opportunity to reorganize the American Army.

1778 -A Charles Barker appears on the 1778 Henry County Tax List. If at least 21 years old, the traditional birth date would be incorrect. His birth year would have to be 1757 or earlier to own property in 1778. The Charles Barker listed in the Henry County records might not be the same Charles Barker who is the son of John Barker and Martha Snead.
1779 - Charles Barker does not appear on the Henry County Tax List.
(Perhaps the Henry County Charles and Edward Barker were Charles, Sr.'s brother, uncle or cousin).

General Notes:Some researchers list William Bays, Sr. as having married a Rachel Broadwater. Some researchers list Wiliam Bays, Sr. as having married a Rachel Barker. The sources for both are unknown. A marriage to a Bays rather than a Broadwater seems more likely because these families both came from Henry County, VA. However, this marriage is not proved. At the moment, it is based strictly on probability rather than any documentation.
Rachel married William Bays in 1779. William was born in 1760 in Halifax, Virginia, USA and died in 1827 in Scott County, Virginia, USA at age 67.

From a military point of view, the history of the entire regiment hinged on the first nine days of September 1863. The capture of two-thirds of the regiment's effective force at Cumberland Gap was never overcome. The 64th's first regimental commander, Campbell Slemp, was cashiered from service for disobeying orders. Auburn Pridemore and the other field and staff officers, however, were apparently no better at military discipline than Slemp was. In-fighting among the 64th Virginia Mounted Infantry's regimental and brigade officers destroyed a potentially valuable group of soldiers for the Confederacy. The regiment's men finally accepted more far-flung assignments, but it was too late to be of benefit or to redeem their reputation.
The casualties taken in battle were among the lowest of any regiment in the Confederate Army. Despite the lack of shed blood, the regiment suffered a horrendous death rate, mostly at the infamous Union prison at Camp Douglas. The record of the regiment is mixed and so is the commentary. A group of men with no vested economic interest in Southern Independence served, but only served where they could care for the needs of their families.

From "Cass County Missouri Families", Cass County Historical Society
The Barker Family was privileged to have been among the early settlers of Cass County, Missouri having moved here in 1866 from Washington County, Virginia. The family had been established in Virginia more than two-hundred years earlier by an English immigrant, and several of its members fought against the British in the Revolutionary War Battle of King's Mountains, North Carolina.
Joseph G. Barker (1784-7 March 1857), a Baptist Minister, was the father of Sherwood Millard Barker (24 August 1818 - 22 June 1890). Sherwood married Katherine S. (Kate) Barker (22 November 1819 -15 March 1891) on 20 April 1842 and to this union were born eleven children.
Shortly after his father's death, Sherwood M. Barker sold his Virginia land, and moved his large family to Missouri where he bought land south of Peculiar. Two cousins settled nearby.
Sherwood Barker was a Baptist Minister, and his family helped organize the Anitoch Baptist (Rodman) Church on 29 August 1889. He also taught school and farmed. His children were well educated and all of them taught school in Cass County at one time or another.
The oldest son, William Millard Barker (17 March 1847 - 7 December 1934), became a Baptist Minister (like his father, grandfather and great-grandfather) and was the pastor at Grand River Church, then a Missionary in Oklahom
